Breakfast debate – Technology & Media in the digital single market

On the 5th of July, took place, at the Sheraton Lisbon Hotel, the breakfast debate “Technology & Media in the digital single market”.

The welcome remarks was presented by the President of AmCham, António Martins da Costa, followed by the intervention of Keynote Speaker Sulina Connal, Managing Director, News and Books Partnerships – EMEA Google.

After the Keynote Speaker’s intervention, started the debate session, composed of the panel of speakers:

  • Gustavo Cardoso – Director OberCom
  • João Palmeiro – President API (Portuguese Press Association)
  • Rudolf Gruner – Director-General of Observador
  • Sulina Connal – Managing Director, News and Books Program – EMEA Google.

The debate was moderated by Ana Sanlez – Observador.

Sulina Connal

  • Transformation and optimism;
  • A new industry. New business models, new way of doing and attracting publicity. Attract and integrate the digital transformation that is taking place;
  • Subscription lets you get more out of it than ever before;
  • Google, with 8 million users, is a partner in this process.
  • Google is a technological company, it contributes with what it knows how to do well: Tools.
  • On this “digital road” Google works together with its partners to share information, provide training and find solutions.

Gustavo Cardoso

  • Age of networking communication. The age of mass communication is behind us;
  • Challenge: how to create a win win situation between the national press and global platforms. Negotiate.
  • Cultural change in the way people look at the news.

João Palmeiro

  • Building the future has to be in partnership;
  • Lots of technical discussion and little discussion about content.

Rudolf Gruner:

  • 50% of sales come via Google and Social Networks;
  • People no longer need to look for news, they come to people;
  • Model: First free and open and, after the brand matures, subscription.
  • Innovation is seen in information, but innovation is not seen in news.

Sobre Sulina Connal – Keynote Speaker

Sulina is the Managing Director leading the partnership for News and Books ecosystem in EMEA in relation to Google products and programmes. She joined Google in April 2020 and has since been engaged in Google’s proposals to publishers under the new directive across Europe as well working in Europe, Middle East and Africa on products and programmes and training to support publishers engage with their readers, understand their needs and develop reader revenue as part of their journey towards digital transformation.

She first worked as a barrister in intellectual property in the UK later moving to telecoms and the role of VP of Corporate Development at Orange where she developed an expertise in M&A, mobile telecoms as well as B2B activities such as cloud, satellite and cybersecurity across EMEA markets. She joined Facebook working on Telco partnerships and managed their data scientist team before joining Google for her current role. She is an Independent Director of Endava PLC, a NASDAQ software development company.

Sulina is Indian and Scottish, living in Paris with her French husband and four children.
