President Joe Biden signed on Dec. 23 the National Defense Authorization Act into law, which included bipartisan legislation to help increase trade and investment ties between the United States and Portugal. Introduced by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Cong. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.), the Advancing Mutual Interests and Growing Our Success (AMIGOS) Act made Portuguese nationals eligible for trade (E-1) and investor (E-2) temporary entry visas.

“Generations of Portuguese immigrants have made lasting contributions to Rhode Island’s culture and economy,” said Sen. Whitehouse in a prepared statement, after the bill was approved by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 15. “Our bipartisan AMIGOS Act strengthens our economic relationship with Portugal and promotes job-creating investments in the United States, and I look forward to the President signing it into law.”
