Chapter V – The 1980s – The Decade of Projection and Influence

We continue to discover and tell the history of AmCham Portugal, now entering the 1980s, a decade marked by the consolidation of the work carried out in previous decades and by a new phase of growth, projection and influence.

Having overcome the challenge of survival, it was time to grow. Against a backdrop of profound economic, social and political change, AmCham increased its membership, diversified its initiatives and stepped up its activity, establishing itself as an increasingly relevant voice among policymakers, public bodies and international investors.

Over this decade, the Chamber went from being an organization devoted solely to promoting trade relations to establishing itself as a credible interlocutor and an active player in the modernization of the Portuguese business community, reflecting the maturity and influence it had by then achieved.

Chapter I – The Founding Moment

At 75, there is a great deal of history to tell, to learn about and to rediscover.

As part of AmCham’s 75th anniversary celebrations, we are now beginning to share our history, chapter by chapter. We start at the beginning: the year AmCham was founded, the context in which it was born and the vision behind it.

This work led us to revisit archives, look for old records and do research, because 75 years is a long time and memory is not always organized or gathered in one place. It was a true exercise of discovery, carried out with great pleasure, which allowed us to rediscover our origins and bring to light a history that perhaps few people know and that deserves to be told.

This is the first step of a journey we will take throughout the year, culminating in the publication of AmCham’s full history.
