The global digital economy is at a crucial turning point, driven by the rapid advance of Artificial Intelligence and the exponentially growing demand for data flows. Portugal is well positioned to play a significant role in this new era. However, realizing this potential depends on a twofold focus: robust infrastructure and future-ready human capital.

When it comes to infrastructure, Portugal benefits from a strategic geographical advantage. That is why we are investing in subsea cables that connect continents and land directly in Portugal. We are currently strengthening this layer of critical infrastructure, increasing network resilience, with Google’s Equiano, Nuvem and Sol subsea systems. Beyond the direct investment, Portugal’s position as a global connectivity hub creates a foundation that makes the country more attractive for further business development.

Equally important is making sure that people in Portugal are ready for the future. As AI transforms industries, we are focused on equipping the workforce with the right tools. Through $1 million in funding from Google.org, we are training Portuguese university students in essential AI skills, ensuring they enter the job market competitive and ready to lead.

In addition, through our “AI Impulse” initiative, we offer comprehensive AI training to the entire population, across the country.

By combining highly resilient physical infrastructure with broad digital upskilling, Google is proud to help pave the way for Portugal’s continued digital development.
