André Rodrigues
Country Lead of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Portugal

AWS has been strengthening its commitment to Portugal since opening its Lisbon office in 2018, continuously investing in infrastructure, talent and innovation.

Today, with an Amazon Edge Location, an AWS Direct Connect location and the recently announced AWS Local Zone connected to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, Portugal is positioned as a leading technology hub in Europe. According to an independent study by Telecom Advisory Services LLC, the deployment of the Local Zone is expected to generate almost €3 billion in GDP impact, support 17,000 jobs and help Portugal reach 65% enterprise cloud penetration by 2030.

AWS is also boosting Portugal’s dynamic startup ecosystem. Companies such as OutSystems, Talkdesk and Feedzai use AWS cloud and artificial intelligence services to innovate quickly and scale globally, demonstrating Portugal’s ability to produce world-class technology leaders.

On sustainability, in 2025 Amazon signed its first Power Purchase Agreement in Portugal, for the Tâmega Wind Complex. According to the developer, this is a €350 million project that will be the largest wind farm in the country once completed, scheduled for 2027, creating more than 700 jobs at the peak of construction.

The adoption of artificial intelligence is accelerating at an unprecedented pace in Portugal. According to the Unlocking AI Potential study, 41% of Portuguese companies already use AI, with an average of 12 new companies adopting the technology every hour over the past year. AWS is preparing the workforce for this transformation through programs such as AWS Educate, AWS Academy and AWS re/Start, in Lisbon, Porto, Braga and Matosinhos.

With tens of thousands of active customers on the Iberian Peninsula, AWS is a central part of the Portuguese digital economy and remains committed to supporting Portugal’s rise as one of Europe’s leading technology destinations.
